Miss
Anglia 1979. Doesn't that sound like a quality programme?
A brilliant clip to have dug out because it's as funny
in retrospect as it is anachronistic. The programme
is presented by Fred Dineage, and features "Thirty
six Anglian beauties", but as Fred clearly indicates,
there's only five that are really any cop. The contest
is judged by an odd panel, including 'a dopey sitcom
girl', Lewis Collins (from The Professionals, who coincidentally
went to 'handsome school' with Bob), and Nicola Pagett,
who if you are aware of her autobiography, Bob is very
sensitive towards. The gags come thick and fast in this
episode, and the content is supremely funny. Some may
argue that the sexist nature of beauty contests makes
this easy pickings for Bob, and it is true that he doesn't
dissect the programme with as much of an eye on the
presenting and lazy nature of this type of programme
as in some other episodes, but the easy gags are too
hard to resist when you've got a beauty contest with
the presenter of 'How!' hosting and 'man about town'
Lewis Collins going backstage to chat up the birds.
Very, very funny.
